The concept presented in Australia featured a vehicle combination with a total of 129 axle lines which are arranged in three rows of vehicles and driven by means of three power packs. In this configuration, the transporter unit is capable of transporting a submarine weighing up to 3,500 tons.
The transport of submarines on land is considered to be a particularly difficult process, the company said. As powerful and stable as these vessels actually are in their watery element, they are very sensitive if they have to be lifted and transported ashore. On the one hand, transportation on land is necessary due to modern manufacturing technologies in shipbuilding and, on the other, for maintenance and repair work. Components are manufactured at several locations throughout the shipyard that are then combined to form the complete vessel, after which it is taken and placed in the water. This usually takes place using an enormous ship lifting installation which functions similar to that of an elevator.
