In 2010, the US Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) released standard 29 CFR Part 1926, which detailed additional guidelines required for every jobsite operating cranes near, around or under a power line.

The SC&RA’s 19-minute video is a visual demonstration of safe operating procedures in accordance with the OSHA standards for mobile cranes near and around power lines. The video is designed for use during training and in the project planning process.

The video covers: Considerations when planning the assembly or disassembly of a crane near a power line; precautions to take when operating a crane near a power line; where to post warnings; when to use a spotter, as well as alternative measures to spotters; when operations can take place under a power line; encroachment prevention measures and options; smaller than minimum clearance distances; required safety meetings and procedures; what to do when working near transmitter communication towers; and OSHA’s training requirements.

The video shows real world examples of conditions and situations crane operators, signal persons, riggers, and construction workers would encounter when operating near and around power lines.

The association said that the video and booklet were intended for use as the curriculum for a training course and in planning meetings prior to a crane being brought to a worksite.
