The stop-work order affected only the 30 US ton (27t) rough-terrains used on the project, and was recalled two weeks later.

No one was hurt in the second accident, but in the first, on 24 April, Rockrimmon crane operator Humberto Rodriguez was killed when his crane tipped over during construction operations, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Delays in reopening the motorway after the second incident led to penalties of $22,400.

The stop-work order was cancelled after the Colorado Department of Transport approved Rockrimmon Constructors’ corrective action plan, which includes a crane task hazard analysis. “Rockrimmon Constructors regards the successive crane incidents with a heightened level of concern and feels the corrective action plan provides for the highest standard of safety expected of field operations,” the company said.

Both incidents and Rockrimmon safety procedures are currently under review by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
