Skyscraper construction has declined by almost 11% in the first six months of 2009, according to Emporis, a global provider of data on commercial real estate and construction.

Emporis said there were 1,307 skyscrapers listed as under construction in its database at the end of December 2008, falling to 1,165 today. In the same period, the number of skyscrapers listed as on hold worldwide has risen from 124 to 141, it said.

In the US, the number of skyscrapers under construction fell from 203 in December 2008 to 151 in June. Emporis said only two skyscrapers started construction during this period in the US, according to its databse.

In Europe, the number of projects on hold rose from seven out of 117 in December 2008 to 11 out of 112 in June. In South America, skyscraper projects on hold rose from two out of 77 to six out of 75.

Emporis’s listings noted 84 out of 840 skyscraper projects in Asia were on hold in December 2008, rising to 87 out of 769 by June.

The situation in Australia has remained stable said Emporis, as it has in North and Central America. Emporis said the situation for skyscraper construction may even have improved in these regions as the number of skyscrapers on hold has declined between December 2008 and June.
