Smit Transport & Heavy Lift’s Asian Hercules II, one of the largest floating cranes in the world, is booked to lift into place a 1,122t pedestrian bridge across the river Tyne in Newcastle, UK in November.
Watson Steel is fabricating the bridge sections in Bolton. They will be assembled at the Amec Hadrian Offshore construction yard, 8km down river from the installation site.
The structure will be assembled parallel to the quay before being lifted into position. It will be a one-point lift with the hook load increased in 100t stages until the bridge is free of its supports. The structure will then be rotated 90°, transported to the site and lowered onto hinged bearings on the river embankments.
