Smit Transport & Heavy Lift has passed the mid-point in a long series of voyages delivering bridge sections for the approach bridges of the link across the Øresund, which will connect Copenhagen in Denmark with Malmo in Sweden.
The 24,000t deadweight submersible Giant 4 completed the 14th of 25 journeys to be made by Smit vessels on 11 November carrying girders between the Cadiz facility of the fabricator Dragados Offshore in Spain and Malmo’s Northern Harbour in Sweden.
On this voyage it was carrying on its main deck the sections E02, the last for the eastern approach, and W23, the first for the western approach, which were then skidded off the vessel on arrival. Each girder is 140m long and weighs 4,950t.
Smit has also completed the installation of a marine navigation system, comprising eight radar beacons and six light towers, for shipping in the nearby Flinte Channel. Each structure, the largest of which weighed 1,600t, consists of a gravity base platform and a steel tower.
