German rental company Scholpp deployed its Liebherr MK 80 truck-mounted tower crane for a quick job in Stuttgart’s pedestrian precinct. An elevator shaft had to be reconstructed and Scholpp had just 90 minutes to lift loads of up to 500kg onto the 28m high roof. Given the congested site, the crane’s ability to lift a load and trolley it out were crucial. The jib was raised 30% and once the loads were lifted above the height of the building, the trolley was run out to 20m. The crane can lift 1.7t at 36.6m, so this was well within capacity. Raising the cab to the top of the mast gave the operator a clear view when it came to lowering the elevator elements into the shaft. Liebherr says that it has sold more than 60 units of the four-axle MK 80 since its introduction in 2000.
