Konecranes VLC Corporation has received an order for a ship-to-shore (STS) container crane to be delivered to Muuga Container Terminal in the Estonian port of Tallin. The crane will be delivered in spring 2004.
The order was placed by AS Hansa Liising Eesti, which will lease the crane to Muuga Container Terminal. Konecranes also has a contract to maintain the crane.
The panamax size crane has an outreach of 36m, a lifting capacity of 40t, a hoisting speed of 60/120 m/min and trolley speed of 150 m/min.
Muuga had previously relied mainly on mobile harbour cranes. The new crane would secure container handling capabilities for the port as the container traffic increases, Konecranes said.
Konecranes claims to have built most of the ship-to-shore cranes that have been delivered to ports and harbours in the Baltic Sea since the early 1970s.
Sergei Artjomov, chairman of the board of the Muuga Container Terminal, said: “In making the decision to invest in Konecranes STS cranes, we visited several terminals and factories in Belgium, Netherlands, Ireland, Finland and Italy to see similar cranes in operation and learn the conditions of manufacturing these cranes. We were impressed with Konecranes’ technical solutions, including crane design, details of the main structure, construction of the brakes, AC drives, economical electrical motors etc. Also of great importance to us was the availability of service from the local branch and Konecranes’ expertise in different areas such as weather conditions in our region and its possible effects on the crane.” Konecranes VLC has delivered similar STS cranes to this region over the last four years, among others to the ports of Oulu (Finland), Gdynia (Poland), St Petersburg (Russia) and Kotka (Finland).
