Health and safety considerations limited the crane’s access to the building, so the firm decided to use a Terex TC 2800-1 truck mounted lattice boom crane to achieve the long reaches required.

Assembled in three days, the crane was configured with a 72m main boom, 72m luffing fly-jib fixed at 15°, a 30m superlift attachment with 300t of superlift counterweight and 160t of main boom counterweight to perform the majority of the lifts.

To place the furthest of the units the crane used the IC-1 control to switch the luffing fly-jib to its fixed SFSL configuration to reach a 128.5m working radius, allowing placement of a 10t load.

Commenting on the suitability of the crane for work on the tight site at Westfield, near the Olympic Park, Ainscough’s commercial director for the Heavy Cranes Division, Steve Walthen, said: “The new Westfield Shopping Mall complex is a core component of the Olympic development project and access to the building is very restricted.

“Working to a tight schedule, we needed to move in, handle our far-reaching lifts efficiently and safely, dismantle and move out fast to leave room for other teams in just seven days.

“In addition to its outstanding reach capacity and lifting performance, the truck mounted design, compact dimensions and straightforward assembly of the TC 2800-1 were also great benefits that worked very well for us on this highly challenging job.”

The 14m x 14m x-type outrigger configuration featured on the TC 2800-1 along with heavy-duty outrigger mats allowed Ainscough to keep within the 6t per metre ground pressure limits for working on the site.
