The second Platform Twin Ring Containerised crane, the PTC II, has finally been put into service by Dutch heavylift specialist Mammoet. The first PTC crane was put into service in February 1999 by Van Seumeren which at that time planned to build one a year for the next seven years. The reason for the delay was that Van Seumeren’s corporate resources were sidetracked last year by the acquisition of Mammoet, the name under which the company now trades. The PTC cranes are ringer-mounted cranes designed to be stripped down for transportation in standard 20ft or 40 ft containers with a maximum unit weight of 30.4t. No special permits or escorts are required for transportation by road, rail or ship. They are purpose-built for constructing and upgrading refineries and petrochemical plants. PTC II lifts a maximum of 2,000t, has a dead-weight of 2,100t and a maximum boom length of 200m, with jib. It takes eight minutes to slew 360°.
