The five-mile long bridge was being structurally restored to improve its earthquake resistance. The winches were mounted on iron cross beams resting on concrete base piers. They were lowering old beams 175ft (53m) from the bridge deck down to a waiting barge, and lifted new supports into position. Based on feedback from ironworkers on site, the company has developed a new design of brake handle actuator. For this job, the winches lifted loads of 4.5t (10,000 lbs) at speeds up to 9m (30ft)/min.
