German technical standards authority TÜV Hessen is investigating the 20 August collapse of a tower crane in Frankfurt-Rödelheim which killed three crane workers.

The Liebherr 256 HT top-slewing crane was being erected by contractor Wayss & Freytag at a chemical plant. It is reported to have overturned while slewing, falling onto the roof of the works canteen. Fortunately the few people in the canteen escaped without injury. The three men killed were on the crane at the time of the collapse, assembling it.

Cranes Today understands that investigations centre on a pin connection coming loose, though it is not believed that there was any defect in the material.
