Antwerp railway station in Belgium is a terminus that is being converted to allow high speed trains to pass through. While Aertssen Aannemingsbedrijf was brought in for demolition work, sister company Aertssen Kranen supplied lifting services. Among the lifts was the hoisting of one of Aertssen’s own Demag AC 40-1 city cranes onto the track bed where it had to perform lifts from various points between the rails. The Demag was lifted into place by two 100t-class Grove GMK 5100s acting in tandem. When its work was complete it was brought back down again using a single GMK 6250, which is rated at 250t. The overhead cables were not the hazard they might appear – this is a new section of track and not yet in use, so there was no electric current running through them.
