Crane hire firm Baldwins brought in its massive LTM 11000, claimed to be “the world’s largest mobile crane” and valued at $5.5m, for at lift in Edmonton, north London.
BOC Process Plant has fabricated what it says are two of the largest storage vessels ever manufactured in the UK. At 40m high and with a 5m diameter, the tanks will store 480,000 litres of liquid oxygen for the Malaysian Oxygen Company.
The 63t outer sleeves had to be lifted over and onto the inner chambers, which is where Baldwins came in. Baldwins says that the LTM 11000D combines the benefits of a large telescopic crane with the lifting duties traditionally considered only achievable from lattice boom cranes. Originally badged the LTM 1800D by manufacturer Liebherr, it was reconfigured by Baldwins, increasing rated capacity from 800t to 1,000t.
For the two main lifts the crane was configured with 47.6m of main boom, 35m of luffing jib, 35.1m of derrick backmast and 160t of counterweight.
The storage tanks were then laid onto their side for welding before being shipped to Malaysia.
