The 50m tower crane was working on an apartment project for contractor Barratt Homes.

“We understand a crane boom became dislodged and fell onto homes adjacent to the site, then onto a parked car. Tragically, the crane driver and a man who was working on the car have died and another person has minor injuries,” Barratt said in a statement.

“This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families of the men who have died,” the company said.

The Falcon Crane Hire tower crane operator was Jonathan Mark Cloke, 28.

The UK Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation.

“We are, of course, co-operating fully with the investigating authorities and our own Health and Safety team and a senior management team, including a Main Board Director, are present on site. We will also be carrying out our own investigation,” Barratt said.

* The UK-based United Crane Operators’ Association has begun a collection for the family of the deceased tower crane operator, who had a young baby, according to John Batey, founder of the UCOA. HTC Plant is also collecting money from its employees and will transfer the money to the UCOA. The collection is closing at the end of October. Donations should be sent to: Terry Duxbury, 3 South View Close, Skegness, PE25 3JU, UK.
