Exports of American-made construction machinery fell 2.5% in 1998 to $6.88bn.

The fall, which follows a rise of 16.5% in 1997, is attributed to the decline in demand from Asia. Shipments to Asia fell 33% to $808.5m. Shipments to Central America were strongest, rising 21% to $718m. Top market was Canada ($2.28bn) followed by Belgium ($474m).
