Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, (MHI) the main contractor on the new Milwaukee Brewers baseball stadium, has called on Van Seumeren’s CC 12600 crawler crane to complete the heavy lifting work begun on the project by Lampson’s ‘Big Blue’ Transilift.

‘Big Blue’ collapsed on 14 July while lifting a 400 US ton steel roof section, killing three workers (Wind being blamed for Lampson crane collapse Aug99, p3).

Initially, Lampson was to have supplied another Transilift crane to the project but a spokesman for MHI explained that the contractor could not afford to wait until the accident investigation was completed before resuming lifting work. The investigating team from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration is not expected to release its findings for several months.

MHI studied several big cranes, including large Manitowoc models, before approaching the US offices of Holland’s Van Seumeren in Houston, Texas.

The Mannesmann Dematic CC 12600 is being assembled on site and is scheduled to be ready for work by the end of this month. Lampson continues to work on the project with smaller cranes for the lesser lifts.
