Turkish contractor Yüksel Yapi Yatirim is using three Potain MD 185 tower cranes on the construction of a mixed use development in the Levent district of Istanbul.

The $120m Metro City development includes two 27-storey apartment blocks and a 24-storey office block. Yüksel is using cast insitu reinforced concrete for foundations and superstructure. The office tower and an associated retail development will be clad in glass while the apartment buildings will have concrete cladding and steel domes on top. The tower cranes are installed alongside the towers and will rise in 30m intervals to reach heights under hook of 120m. Anchor supports are fitted every 20m. The cranes are being used for general handling duties for formwork, structural steel and other materials. Maximum lifting capacity is 10t at 3.1m radius. The cranes were supplied by Potain’s local representative Tekno Insaat Makinalari as part of an order for eight identical MD 185s. The other five units are at work elsewhere in Istanbul and in Ankara. Construction of Metro City began in 1997 and is scheduled for completion early next year.
