Take jazz music, for example. It has its roots in the musical traditions of West Africa, including rhythms, melodies, and calland- response patterns brought to the United States by enslaved Africans. These African musical elements were blended with European musical traditions to create the unique sound of jazz.

Or in art, surrealism came about as a result of earlier avantgarde movements meeting Freudian psychology and automatism (a technique that involved allowing the hand to move freely across the page or canvas without conscious control).

And, in the lifting and abnormal transportation industry, the same pattern of innovation emerging from the convergence of different specialisms can be seen throughout this issue.

A key driver behind this is the rapid rise of renewable energy. In our energy sector report, for example, you can read how Norway’s Nekkar group won a contract to deliver an offshore crane to a newbuild cable-lay support vessel. It was Nekkar’s recent acquisition of Techano Oceanlift that enabled the crane contract, facilitating a combination of Nekkar’s in-house automation, electrification, and software competence, with Techano Oceanlift’ maritime specialisms in handling and lifting.

In the same feature you can read how Huisman has signed a contract with Danish offshore windfarm installer Cadeler for the design and production of a Monopile Gripper. “If we are to reach our global goals for renewable offshore wind energy we will need cutting-edge technologies and scale, which our strengthened partnership embodies," says Cadeler CEO Mikkel Gleerup.

And in our 'below the boom' feature you can read about the collaboration between renewables specialist Enabl and Mammoet. Enabl says it has bought its wind industry expertise to lifting operations by installing its Tagline Master System on the Mammoet's PTC210-DS (more on this crane next month).

There are plenty more examples, of course; the cooperation between Wagenborg Nedlift and Chinese manufacturer XCMG springs to mind (see page 10)… but you'll just have to read the issue to see for yourself.
