Speakers are being sought for an international conference on crane safety next year.

Crane Safety 2003 is being held at the Victoria Thistle Hotel, London, UK on Monday 16 and Tuesday 17 June 2003.

The first day will explore mobile crane safety; the second day will focus on tower cranes.

Already lined up to speak are: Hosam Hashem, critical lift foreman in the road and heavy equipment department of Saudi Aramco, who will explain the rigorous procedures employed by Aramco for its fleet of 270 mobile cranes; German crane repair specialist Andreas Köhler, who will show examples of how and why mobile cranes collapse, and will also address the controversial issue of boom repair; and Israeli safety expert Felix Weinstein will present a simulation of various tower crane collapses.

Among the distinguished session moderators will be Don Dickie, general manager of the Construction Safety Association of Ontario, Canada, and author of seminal texts on crane safety.

The conference, organised by Cranes Today magazine, will be followed on the morning of Wednesday 18 June by a visit to one of the largest construction sites in Europe: Heathrow airport's new $5bn Terminal Five. Hosting the technical visit is Select Tower Cranes, which will have somewhere between 24 and 29 large tower cranes on site, all of them flat top Comedils, in the capacity range 350tm to 630tm. Besides these there will be a host of crawlers and other mobile cranes slogging away, bringing construction to a peak.

If you are interested in presenting a paper to the seminar, see story below.
