Mayo Civil Engineering uses two Wolffkran tower cranes to build Manchester tower blocks

Rochdale, UK-based contractor Mayo Civil Engineering used its Wolff 235 B and Wolff 166 B tower cranes to help build two tower blocks in Manchester, UK.

According to the cranes’ manufacturer Wolffkran, it is the first time the 235 B crane has been seen in the UK. It is standing at a height of 98 metres tall and fitted with a 45 metre jib. The crane is freestanding so as not to slow down construction by requiring tying-in to the building. To help achieve this eight 3x3 metre TV 33 tower elements on founda-tion anchors were used at the base of the crane. It was erected to its final tower height using a 500-tonne mobile crane with a 63 m luffing jib attached to its main boom.

The Wolff 166 B luffing jib crane stands 83.3 metres tall and is also fitted with a 45 metre jib.

Mayo Civil Engineering has worked with Wolffkran for the past six years. According to Wolffkran, it is reaping the rewards of deciding to purchase new Wolff cranes, rather than hire them.

“Working with Wolffkran on the New Victoria project has been a pleasure,” said Gary Mayo, managing director of Mayo Civil Engineering. “From the initial discussions, agreeing crane speci-fication and purchase, through to erection planning and actual on-site erection, the full Wolffkran team has provided a first-class service with a helpful, can-do attitude at all times.”

Mayo Civil Engineering has previously used its Wolff 166 B cranes to complete two other con-struction projects in Manchester: Ancoats Gardens and Queen Street.
