Michael Gelskey, founder and owner of Lift-It Manufacturing, and president and a director of the Web Sling and Tiedown Association, talks about wear protection and the products on offer from Lift-It.

“There is no such thing as a cut-proof sling and likewise, cut-proof wear protection does not exist.

“Responsible synthetic sling users realise that slings must be protected from abrasive damage and cutting. The edge of the load need not be”razor” sharp to damage and cut through the sling. A moderate edge combined with non-positive sling to load engagement, such as the load shifting in the sling or the sling skipping across the load, can result in sling damage. When load control is not positive, even the best wear protection will not perform properly.

“Cardboard and gloves were not designed as wear protection devices and only devices that have been engineered to withstand the combined effects of pressure and tension should be employed. After testing was conducted, there were three devices that met the criteria of withstanding the tensile and compressive forces necessary to protect the sling; CornerMax pads, CornerMax sleeves and magnetic corner protectors.

“CornerMax pads are designed for 90° edges, are available in 4in–14in widths and feature internal rods that form a tunnel or barrier between the load edge and the sling. CornerMax sleeves are made of Dyneema fibre for use when load configurations are curved or irregular. Magnetic corner protectors are designed for 90° edges, are available for sling widths of 1in to 16in. Curved magnetic protectors or models specifically slotted for I-beam flanges can also be supplied.”
