The Port of Waterford in the Republic of Ireland has ordered a rail mounted gantry crane from Killarney-based Liebherr Cranes to keep up with a projected growth in traffic through its container terminal.

The new crane, slightly bigger than Panamax size, will have a clearance height of 34m under the main girder, an outreach of 40m and a basic lift capacity of 40t.

The crane legs will be wider to cater for increasing numbers of 45ft long containers, and the longer backreach will allow hatch covers to be landed clear of the crane legs.

The new gantry crane will fabricated in Killarney and assembled at the quayside. It is scheduled to begin operation early in 2002.
