UK transport and heavy lift company Allelys transported a 176-tonne steam turbine generator and then lifted it onto a boat on the east coast of England. The generator measured 14 metres long, 4.8m wide, and 4.5m high so specialised transportation and lifting equipment was necessary.

A specialist trailer in a 16-axle configuration was used to move the generator from Peterborough to the Port of Sutton Bridge, a distance of around 30 miles.

Once the generator arrived at the port Allelys lifted it onto a vessel, bound for Singapore, Allelys using its Liebherr LG1550 lattice boom crawler crane. The crane was rigged with three spreader beams, designed and manufactured by UK manufacturer Modulift, in a 1-over-2 configuration. This configuration, says Modulift, allows for multiple lifting points using just one crane.

“The spreader beam configuration included a MOD 250 at 5m on the top, with MOD 110 and 110H spreader beams underneath,” explained Shahid Islam, project manager at Allelys. “The team executed the lift successfully within a very tight timeframe, with safety being the most critical factor in the project.”

“The MOD spreader beams are lightweight, easily assembled and can be re-used for different lifts,” added Sarah Spivey, managing director at Modulift.
