The European lifting and special transport trade association, ESTA, has released a new survey aimed at owners and operators of new mobile cranes, built in compliance with the revised EU standard.

The questionnaire is designed to see whether owners and operators have found the new cranes to be safer, and to assess whether a further revision, designed to bring European cranes into line with cranes sold in other major markets would be welcomed by European crane owners and operators. Changes to the use of the override key, introduced in the 2010 revision, provoked concern in the US and threaten to limit the transatlantic trade in used cranes.

Together, ESTA, the European manufacturers association FEM, US trade body SC&RA and Australian trade body CICA have suggested revisions to the standard that would balance US and EU approaches to the safe use of rated capacity limiters. The consensus position was rejected by the EU when it was first suggested, so responses to the survey will be vital in any new approach.

The survey can be downloaded from the link on the right, or from www.esta-eu.org
