Dutch heavy lift and transport specialist Mammoet has acquired an eight-hectare harbour site on the Axel Plain in Westdorpe, Netherlands, to develop the firm’s third multi-purpose terminal.

Located to the South of the Terneuzen seaport, Mammoet Benelux’s Autrichehaven site will include a 300m long quay capable of handling vessels of up to 12.5m draft.

It will also serve as a test site for three new super heavy lift dockside cranes being developed by the firm; the first two, the 3200t PTC 120 DS and PTC 160 DS, will be commercially available in 2011.

Once developed the new harbour site is expected to increase traffic at Zeeland Seaports (consisting of the ports of Terneuzen and Vlissingen-Oost) which already handles 28.8 million tones of cargo each year.

The new terminal in the Gent/Ghent-Terneuzen canal will be second Mammoet terminal near Terneuzen, the first already providing 23,000 sq m of container storage space.

Mammoet also has a heavy lift terminal with 20,000 sq m of storage space in Schiedam at the Port of Rotterdam.
