Looking (fast) forward...
16 January, 2023
Perhaps it's me but it feels like time is accelerating.

Reality Check: The Future Is Bright
07 December, 2022
It was great to see so many of you, old friends and new faces alike, at this year's Bauma show. To arrive in Munich just as our 50th anniversary issue was being released added to the thrill.

Past, present and future…
17 November, 2022
Welcome to this very special issue of Cranes Today magazine. Why so special? Well 50 years ago, this month, our first issue was published. To mark the occasion, our golden anniversary, we’ve pulled out all the stops and published our largest ever issue. In addition, we’ve gone to print slightly early than usual to benefit from maximum exposure at the long-awaited Bauma trade show in Munich, Germany. Check our updated Bauma guide on to learn about the latest industry offerings that will be on show there.

All together now...
24 October, 2022
The world continues to be a worrying place. Climate change, the cost of living crisis, supply chain disruption, war in Ukraine, and rising gas prices all underpin an uncertain future. As if all that wasn't enough now Queen Elizabeth II has died.

Actions speak louder than words
16 September, 2022
In my editor's comment last month I issued a 'call for action' urging crane owners to make their voice heard in demanding more 'green' equipment options. Well, this month, I'm pleased to say there have been some developments...

Looking foward...
22 July, 2022
With summer having well and truly arrived here in the UK, it is with a feeling of optimism that I write this month's Comment. It's not just the sunshine that has returned; international travel is back on the agenda, too. With forthcoming Terex and Liebherr trips, plus Bauma 2022 tickets now booked, I'm looking forward to getting away from a desk and meeting people face-to-face again.

Electric avenue
17 June, 2022
It was nice to catch up with some familiar faces at this year's Vertikal Days show in the UK in mid-May, not to mention all the new people we met whilst there.

Experience and innovation
17 July, 2019
One of the things that makes the crane industry so interesting to report on, is the level of innovation coming out of a relatively small and tightly-knit industry. Unlike other sectors I've covered, it has been relatively easy to meet a broad range of suppliers and users; and, where some industries progress only slowly, just in the decade or so I've been covering the sector, I've seen new crane types come into regular use.

Fitting capacity to requirements
22 May, 2019
On any crane contract, the first and most vital commercial step is to make sure that the crane you bring to the job site matches the clients' lifting requirements: big enough to work safely, but not so big that you're wasting capacity (and, therefore, investment that you can't earn back with profitable rental rates).

Looking back
17 December, 2018
This month, I've been taking a look back over our news coverage for 2018. There have been quite a few significant developments over the year.

Precise planning for perfect practice
19 September, 2018
My first job on Cranes Today was reporting on one of our London conferences.

Valuable shows, sustainable growth?
17 May, 2018
I write this month's comment shortly after returning from Intermat in Paris. As I wrote in my pre-show comment six years—two Intermats—ago, the purpose of the French show is at times unclear. It is at once too big to be a tightly-focussed national lifting show, and too small (and overshadowed in the triennial trade show cycle) to be a global launch show.

Viva l'Italia
15 March, 2018
Visiting the North of Italy in January may not be on most people’s list. Putting aside the cold and Milan’s inexplicable fog, it was an enjoyable week; full of beautiful scenery, delicious food and interesting discussions with local manufacturers. These discussions will turn into articles, full of exclusive information, which you will find in this and the following issues of the magazine.

Borders, deadlines threaten US industry
17 April, 2017
As the worldwide construction-equipment event cycle evolves, it has become harder and harder for any event other than bauma in Munich to really claim to represent the global industry. ConExpo in Las Vegas certainly makes a good showing, but with launches in a hard market recently focused on the German show a year before, it is hard for it to claim to be anything other than the biggest show in the Americas, not a transatlantic contender for the global crown.

A throw of the dice
23 January, 2017
This month, as the year gets underway, we have articles looking back over the past 20 years, and forward to the year ahead. With ConExpo in Las Vegas, we also take a first look at some of the cranes we expect to see at the show.

October surprises
07 November, 2016
This month has been surprisingly busy for the crane industry. Often, autumn is the down season for crane launches, falling between the big trade shows in the spring. This October though, we've had four very significant pieces of news.

At 500, a look to the future
26 September, 2016
This month's issue of Cranes Today is the 500th we've published. Looking back over issues of the magazine, it's easy to see how cranes have been transformed by technology, with a wealth of interconnected sensors and electronic control systems making lifting safer and the operator's job more comfortable.

A good Bauma?
10 May, 2016
This year's Bauma showed some positive signs, for the first time in almost a decade. We saw some exciting new products, heard good sales reports from parts of the industry, and learnt of some positive regulatory news.

This year in Cranes Today
28 January, 2016
This looks to be an exciting year for the crane industry, and I hope, for readers of Cranes Today.
