Construction company TERNA has deployed a fleet of Liebherr tower cranes for the structural construction phase of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Athens, a project valued at around €1.85bn ($2.1bn).
Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Athens is located on the site of the former Hellinikon International Airport on the Athens Riviera.
The hotel and casino tower will stand at roughly 200m tall and forms the centrepiece of the Integrated Resort Complex Ellinikou (IRC).
TERNA, which is the main contractor for the build, is using multiple Liebherr tower crane models across the 42-storey tower.
The cranes are tasked with moving structural steel and supporting concrete works throughout changing site and weather conditions, including the significant wind forces arising from the project’s coastal location.
Four primary crane models are in use on the tower: the 202 EC-B 10 Litronic, 258 HC-L Fibre, 250 EC-B 12 Litronic, and 230 HC-L.
Additional cranes from the EC-B and EC-H series are deployed to support construction requirements.
According to the companies involved, the selection focused on the lifting capacity of the equipment and on-site service provided by Stagakis, Liebherr’s official sales partner in Greece.
Liebherr Tower Crane Solutions collaborated with TERNA on the technical configuration, site planning, and crane set-up.
A spokesperson for TERNA said: “The collaboration with the Liebherr Tower Crane Solution was excellent and we are highly satisfied with the crane solutions delivered.”
Construction started in March 2025 and is scheduled to finish by December 2028.
The tower, designed by Gensler with façade design by EOC, will include approximately 1,100 guest rooms, a casino with 180 gaming tables and 1,500 slot machines, and various other amenities.
Post-completion, developers anticipate about 15,000 daily visitors and roughly 3,000 permanent staff.
The project is a joint development between Hard Rock International and GEK TERNA Group, with the latter overseeing construction and management.
The IRC project is part of a broader plan known as The Ellinikon, which aims to redevelop a site vacant for over 20 years into a major leisure and business destination.
Developers expect the casino operation to contribute to tax revenues over a 30-year concession period.
