Two Potain MCT 560 M25 tower cranes are being used to construct the 253m tall south tower of the Shituo Yangtze River Bridge underway in Chongqing, China.

The cranes are currently operating at heights near 285m above the Yangtze River as part of a major effort to complete the bridge. It will carry both road and high-speed rail traffic on the Chongqing-Wanzhou High-Speed Railway.

The project utilises the Potain MCT 560 M25’s lifting capabilities and extended working radius to manage the ongoing delivery of steel reinforcement, formwork, and large components.

These cranes are designed for demanding infrastructure applications and are climbing along with the structure as engineering advances, supporting an ambitious 30-month construction schedule.

Manitowoc’s customer support centre in Zhangjiagang, together with its national technician network, provides parts and maintenance to support operations.

The Potain MCT 560 M25 models, each with a lifting capacity of up to 25t and capable of lifting 4t at the tip of an 80m jib, are handling adverse site conditions, including wind speeds registered at up to 20m/s.

Manitowoc China marketing manager Leo Qian said: “The Potain MCT 560 M25 delivers outstanding performance at height, climbing to over 200m with a 25t maximum capacity.

“These characteristics make it well-suited to the demands of high-altitude operations and heavy component handling on the Shituo Yangtze River Bridge, providing reliable performance to complete this demanding project.”

Chongqing Haohai Construction Equipment Leasing owns the two cranes, having purchased them in 2020.

They were previously deployed on the Taiziping Wujiang River Bridge project between 2020 and 2024, which, according to the company, influenced their decision to use the same models for the current project.

The Shituo Yangtze River Bridge is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

Last month, Potain MC 310 K12 and MC 205 B tower cranes were used in the construction of new presidential palaces in Nusantara, Indonesia.
