Autovictor has lifted a 192t tram bridge into position over Bologna’s Navile Canal using a Tadano CC 38.650-1 lattice-boom crawler crane.

The 45m-long bridge was installed in the Corticella district on 30 September 2026.

Autovictor managed the heavy-lifting operation, including crane assembly and the final placement of the bridge on its abutments.

According to Tadano, the lift itself took just over an hour. Preparing the operation, including assembling the crane, took approximately two weeks.

The work was carried out in a densely built-up urban area, where limited space, existing infrastructure and traffic conditions affected the planning of the lift.

The bridge had to be moved into position while the crane operated within the available working area.

Autovictor configured the CC 38.650-1 in the SSL_1 arrangement for the operation. The crane used a 54m main boom and a 36m Vario-SL mast.

The configuration included 165t of superstructure counterweight and 50t of central ballast on the carrier. A further 285t of SL counterweight was also installed.

The lifting team raised the bridge and positioned it on its supports during a single operation. Tadano said the work was completed as planned following detailed preparation by Autovictor’s engineering, assembly and crane operating teams.

Tadano said: “Despite the complexity of the lift, everything went exactly according to plan—thanks to the meticulous planning of the Autovictor team, the professionalism of the assembly crew and crane operators, and, of course, the reliability of the Tadano CC 38.650-1.”

The CC 38.650-1 has a maximum lifting capacity of 650t at a 12m radius, according to Tadano.

The crane also uses a divisible superlift frame, allowing the counterweight system to be uncoupled during transport and assembly.

The Bologna project required the crane to be assembled and operated in a constrained urban setting before the bridge was moved into its final position over the canal.
