German lifting contractor Haslach has deployed its Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 mobile crane to install three 20t precast concrete columns for a potato storage hall in Ehingen-Berg, Germany.

The columns, each weighing 20t, provide essential structural support to ensure the stability of the new hall.

Although the lifts could have been managed by a smaller crane, Haslach deliberately chose the 230t capacity LTM 1230-5.1.

According to managing director Tobias Haslach, this decision allowed the company to complete the operation without needing counterweights or a separate ballast transport vehicle.

Haslach said: “With a smaller crane, ballast plates would have had to be transported to the construction site in a separate vehicle. The LTM 1230-5.1 was able to carry out the operation without ballast thanks to its stable telescopic boom. This meant we could save on an additional vehicle and a driver.”

The Liebherr LTM 1230-5.1 features a 75m telescopic boom and, with lattice extensions, can reach a maximum hook height of 111m.

While it is often used for tasks requiring substantial reach, such as wind turbine maintenance or tower crane assembly, in this project, Haslach cited its stable load handling at ground level as a deciding factor.

The lift took place near the Liebherr mobile crane plant and the company’s Service Branch South in Ehingen, with both facilities visible from the work site.

The LTM 1230-5.1 operated by Haslach had originally been manufactured at the same Liebherr facility nearly five years ago.

Haslach performed the work for construction firm Dobler, which is headquartered in Kaufbeuren and also operates the precast plant that supplied the heavy concrete elements.

The two companies have a long-established working relationship.

Haslach, based in Wertach, operates nine Liebherr mobile cranes with lifting capacities from 10 to 300t. Its work includes lifts for precast concrete, timber construction and photovoltaic projects.
