Taskmasters tower crane rescue

Two trained Taskmasters rescuers scaled the tower crane based at the site, which measures more than 30 metres high, to simulate a rescue from the crane’s cab. This is the type of rescue procedure that would be performed if the driver suffered a heart attack.

The second simulation saw the rescuers using the firm’s Safe Return system to come to the aid of a victim who had been suspended from the crane’s jib. The system attaches to a structural member of the crane and feeds a line through a geared hub to lower an injured person safely.

After returning to ground level, the rescuers also demonstrated the casualty aftercare required for someone suffering from ‘suspension trauma’ which can affect anyone who has been left in a dangling position at height for more than a few minutes. A trained access rescue specialist played the part of the victim for both rescues, while Taskmasters managing director Paul Harrison co-ordinated the trials from ground level via radio.

“We were delighted to link up with Taskmasters to trial these innovative new methods,” says Bluestone safety, health and environment manager Bob Hackett. “Health and safety is of the utmost importance and we were pleased to help them test these new systems by making our crane available.”

“Planning and implementation of crane rescues is currently of paramount importance in the construction industry,” adds Paul Harrison, managing director of Taskmasters. “The unique Safe Return system allows trained operatives to rescue themselves or their colleagues without relying on the emergency services which we are delighted to help evolve as an industry best practice.”

Bluestone began building the £5.7 million new Eastbourne Cultural Centre for Eastbourne Borough Council in October 2005. The multi-use complex will provide a new home for the town’s Towner Art collection, as well as gallery space for touring exhibitions, conference facilities, community activity rooms, a gallery shop and a café with sun terrace.

?The project is due to be completed later this year.
