Cape Town, South Africa-headquartered Allied Crane Hire, which operates across sub-Saharan Africa, took delivery of the first eight-axle, 700-tonne capacity, Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 mobile crane in Africa in early September.

Since receiving the crane Allied has primarily been using it for mining work although Allied intends to also use the crane for wind, petrochemical, and construction work, too.

In addition to its high lifting capacity the crane is available with two different telescopic boom lengths, 54 metres and 80 metres, which can be interchanged.

The crane comes with Liebherr’s VarioBallast and VarioBasetechnologies, as well as Liebherr’s new NK System luffing jib system. This is a hinged luffing jib assembly system designed to reduce the space required for erecting long luffing jibs in confined spaces.

In the past Allied Crane Hire has been the first company in Sub-Saharan Africa to receive an LTM 1110-5.1, an LTM 1150-5.3, and an LTM 1230-5.1.

The company’s fleet currently consists of 20 Liebherr cranes.

These include:

  • two LTM 1160-5.1
  • one LTM 1500-8.1
  • one LTM 1070-4.2
  • two LTM 1200-5.1s
  • three LRT 1090-2.1s
  • two LTM 1230-5.1s
  • two LRT 1100-2.1s
  • one LTM 1110-5.1
  • one LTM 1150-5.3
  • and the new LTM 1650-8.1.
