Since 2006, Gottwald has been updating its entire range to the new Generation 5. Prior to this new launch, the Generation 5 cranes extended from the 100t capacity, 46m maximum reach, Model 4 through to the 200t, 56m, Model 8. The new Model 3 replaces one of the last cranes from the previous Generation 4 series, the HMK 260, which lifts a maximum 100t and has a maximum reach of 44m.

The Model 3 adds 2m to the maximum reach of the HMK 260. It also offers faster working speeds than the older crane. The new crane boasts an installed maximum output of 895kW and hoisting speeds of 120m/min, compared to output of 649kW and hoisting speeds of 85m/min on the HMK 260.

Like all cranes in the Generation 5 series, the Model 5 is electrically driven, and powered either by a diesel generator or by an onshore power supply. The crane can use an optional hybrid drive system, storing energy recovered during lowering in double-layer capacitors for immediate use. Dynamic brake resistors can add to the fuel savings achieved by using hybrid drive.
