John Deere’s Powertech PSX engine, and engines from the PVX series above 130kW (174hp), are the first 6.8 litre engine models made by the manufacturer to comply with EPA standards and European Union stage IIIB standards.
The established industrial and agricultural plant fabricator supplies crane manufacturers like Manitowoc, often providing re-powers to bring firms’ existing fleet into line with emissions standards. JDPS have already had 9.0 litre versions of the PVX and PSX series certified by the EPA and EU earlier this year, and similarly, the two 6.8 litre product lines were based on earlier tier three/stage three A engine platforms.
The engines feature an exhaust filter to ensure diesel particulate matter in the exhaust is reduced by 90%, in accordance with the standards, and also use cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) to reduce Nitrogen Oxide emissions.
JPDS product planning manager, Doug Laudick, said: “We have received very positive feedback from customers testing our Interim Tier 4/Stage III B powered machines in the field. “We remain committed to ensuring our engines withstand the extreme vibration, temperatures and duty cycles found in those applications.” EPA’s interim tier four standard, analogous to Europe’s stage three B standard, will come into effect on 1 January 2011.
