Kalmar Industries has received orders for 14 rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes from two major Red Sea port facilities 10 for Jeddah’s South Container Terminal in Saudi Arabia and four to be delivered to the Port of Djibouti.

The RTGs are all 6+1 containers wide and 1 over 5 high. The machines for delivery to Jeddah will be the 16-wheel model.

The RTGs incorporate an intelligent, all-electric trolley design. As well as allowing easy access to components, this single-level trolley design features the Kalmar-developed stabiliser to reduce load sway. Operators can activate the stabiliser with the push of a button and the spreader is stabilised for easy and fast manoeuvrability. The stabiliser system is also available for retrofitting to older Kalmar RTGs.

The all-electric trolley design eliminates hydraulic movements, making the RTGs not only maintenance free but also, Kalmar claims, more environmentally friendly because no hydraulic oils are required.

Keijo Parviainen, Kalmar vice president for yard cranes, commented: “These latest orders reflect a growing trend that sees operators willing to invest in machines that deliver state-of-the-art quality, reliability and excellent productivity. Buyer-supplier partnership and a high level of after-sales service are also becoming increasingly important deal clinchers.”
