MacGregor Cranes has received its biggest ever order for container-handling ship cranes, valued at $30m, from the Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co Ltd.
The cranes are part of a delivery by MacGregor of 20 container vessels, each with a capacity of 1,800TEU (twenty-feet equivilent units) to German ship owner OFFEN. A capacity of 1,800TEU means there is space for 1,800 20ft or 900 40ft boxes.
MacGregor Cranes’ general manager Leif Bystrom told Cranes Today: “I am not surprised by this order because trade is increasing globally, and the container market is getting bigger. Order sizes could continue to get larger.”
He added that logic dictated that increasing trade meant more products needed to be transported, and containers had to be lifted by cranes.
Bystrom would not specify the number of cranes but they are expected to be 45t and will be manufactured in South Korea.
The deal was secured early last month, but the cranes will not be delivered until 2007 and 2008.
MacGregor is a division of Finnish cargo-handling solutions provider Cargotec Corporation, formerly part of KONE Corporation.
