German heavy haulage and logistics company P. Schwandner Logistik + Transport has been transporting components for a new wind farm using a convoy of eight MAX810 semitrailers.
The delivery operation, conducted at night, involves moving concrete half-shells from the manufacturing facility along a route that includes country roads, motorways, and narrow forest tracks to the build site.
The process starts on the factory premises, where concrete elements stand ready for loading.
Weather conditions during the most recent operation ranged from brief snow flurries to clear skies.
Drivers manoeuvre their vehicles into position to receive their loads, relying on the trailers’ forced steering systems for accuracy.
P. Schwandner Logistik + Transport transport manager Jakob Stuiber said: “When manoeuvring, the forced steering system ensures absolute precision. The remote-controlled steering of the 17.5” pendle-axles is extremely practical in every situation.”
Loading is conducted using a mobile gantry crane, which carefully places each concrete segment onto the trailers.
Hydraulic features such as ride height adjustment and steering alignment are also managed via remote control.
Once the loads are secure, the convoy moves to a designated holding area, awaiting the start time for night transport.
Transport activities begin at 11 p.m., with drivers and escort staff working together through the night.
Traffic on the route remains steady even at these hours, as the convoy proceeds towards Berlin, drawing attention due to the size and configuration of the transported items. The MAX810 trailers maintain stability even when fully extended and navigating motorway exits.
Stuiber said: “This stability, combined with the forced steering system, is exactly what makes the difference in daily operations.”
As the journey concludes, the convoy arrives in a rural forested region where a wind farm comprising ten hybrid-construction turbines is under development.
The turbines are being assembled from concrete sections at the base and lighter steel for the upper structure, with the completed towers expected to reach about 179m.
At the site, activity continues into the morning, with eight MAX810 units involved in deliveries and plans to add another six vehicles of the same type to the Schwandner fleet in future operations.
The MAX810 semitrailers used in the project feature 17ft 5in pendle-axles, options for different axle configurations, low loading height, and remote-controlled hydraulic systems designed to assist in the transport of large and heavy components.
