BICES preview

20 September 2011

The 2011 Beijing International Construction Machinery Exibition (BICES) is expected to feature more than 880 exhibitors and attract more than the 78,600 visitors that came to last year’s exhibition. With so much to see, savvy visitors will pinpoint the cranes they want to see ahead of time.

The exhibition will provide a focal point for the construction and mining industries by showing the newest equipment available to these sectors in China. A total of 200,000 sq m is allotted for BICES 2011 within the Beijing Jiuhua International Exhibition Center, where IVEX, the Beijing International Commercial Vehicle Exhibition will be concurrently underway.

The China Construction Machinery Association and China Machinery Industry Association, along with the US Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) have united to organise BICES this year and ensure international attendance.

This year’s chosen theme is ‘build the world of green’ and organisers expect that a major focus of the show will be the construction equipment needed to expand infrastructure in China. Accordingly procurement teams from Chinese government will be in attendance with a view to meeting this goal.

Visitors will be able to view one of Asia’s largest crawler cranes, Sany’s 1,180t SCC11800, China’s largest earthmover, and the world’s most productive asphalt mixing plant.

Highly regarded manufacturers with manufacturing facilities within China, such as Sany, Liugong, Yongmao, Zoomlion, Manitowoc and Terex, have given Cranes Today a glimpse of the cranes and services they expect to generate the most interest.

Zoomlion
Zoomlion, headquartered in Hunan, will have a large display, featuring equipment from nearly all of its crane segments. While the equipment is not new it contains mostly cranes targeting Chinese markets, and two rough terrain cranes built for western markets. The display will show three truck cranes, two crawlers, two rough terrains and two tower cranes.

The RT55 rough terrain crane, with a lifting capacity of 55t, was independently developed by Zoomlion for Bauma Munich last year. To meet North American and European emissions standards it has a TuV certified engine, which is compliant under ASME, EN13000, and OSHA. The cranes are also certified under SUD, a European certification body.

An additional rough terrain crane with a 100t lifting capacity designed for worldwide distribution, the RT100, will be on the stand.

Zoomlion is also showing two of its tower cranes, model numbers TCT7015 and TCR6030, and two of its crawlers, model numbers QUY550 and ZTM500. It will also feature truck crane models QY80VF, QAY400, and QAY260.

It will show the QAY 260 all-terrain truck Crane, built on a Zoomlion ZLJ5720 chassis. It has a maximum lifting capacity of 255t and a maximum lifting height of 62.6m. It is designed with a hexagonal boom for higher strength, increased longevity with anti-slew steel wire. The automatic moment limiter is self-testing and alarmed.

Sany
The majority of cranes on Sany’s stand will be a surprise for visitors, although the conference organisers say that Sany’s 1,180t SCC11800, introduced in 2009, will be on display. Sany says it offers one of the most extensive servicing networks. It has 24 service companies, 90 service centers and 15 parts warehouses around the globe, with parts warehouses on every continent to decrease waiting times.

Within China, Sany has five major locations, some of which engage in manufacturing and services. Multiple distributor-run service centres exist in the neighbouring countries of India, Korea, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and Russia.

This network is growing. A new service centre in Mongolia is one of nine in the world which are scheduled to commence operations in the near future, four of which are in Africa.

Sany will provide operator training courses for operators of newly purchased cranes. Two days of training are offered free of charge.

As part of its quality assurance program, Sany conducts three inspections on each machine before its delivery to a client. The quality control process continues after the point of sale with four comprehensive machine checks within the warranty period.

Terex
Terex is introducing a series of four new truck cranes, not yet made public so as to be surprise for visitors. Truck cranes will be launched in capacity classes of 25t, 55t and 100t. A fourth new truck crane in an unknown class will be introduced simultaneously. While to date no specific target market for the truck cranes has been announced, the distribution area will cover at least China to begin with.

Also on the stand, Terex will display the Powerlift 8000 crawler crane, which lifts 360t at a radius of 5.2m. However, it can be compact, with crawler pads that can adjust to different road widths by telescoping in and out, allowing access to job sites with narrow roads. Its boom reaches a maximum length of 96.5m. It may be adjusted with three fixed jib attachments, easuring 9.5m, 15.5m and 18.5m. The crawler is well equipped for wind-turbine erection, among other applications, Terex said. Features of the Powerlift 8000 Maximize operator comfort and ease of use, such as adjustable seating, air conditioning, heating, stereo and an imported touch screen display.

The new truck crane range is made in China. It is made at Terex’s Changjiang factory, established as a joint venture in 2006 for the manufacture of truck cranes. In recent years, Terex has announced further similar joint ventures with Chinese crane manufacturers NFLG and Topower, a manufacturer of smaller crawler cranes.

Yongmao
While tower crane manufacturer Yongmao will not have any cranes on the stand, it will have material on its range of independently developed topless, topkit, and luffing tower cranes, all of which are manufactured in Fushun City, China.

Yongmao’s cranes are currently used for major works in the region, and they are available with external climbing, inner climbing and traveling trolleys.

The company is highlighting its STL720 luffing tower crane, available with maximum lifting capacities of 32t or 50t. The STL720 reaches 42.4m at its tallest freestanding height, and has a 60m jib. Salespeople at the stand will be able to describe how five STL720 cranes were recently used to construct a new development in Tianjin Binhai, China.

Also recently used on a job site in China, the STT553 flat-top tower crane, with a freestanding height of 67.6m, comes in capacities of 18, 20 and 24t. Its jib length reaches 80m. More than five STT553’s were used for the construction of the Fujian Fuqing Nuclear Project.

Liugong
Liugong, a Chinese crane and equipment manufacturer, will be displaying a huge spread of construction machines, 34 machines in total, from both crane and earthmoving segments. The stand will be located over two booths, E451 and E558.

The large collection of machines on display will include the TC700, TC250 and TC500 model truck cranes.

For both TC250 and TC500, Liugong has independent intellectual property rights on the full product, it says.

Liugong says that a higher capacity truck crane from the same series, the TC700, is among the highest of the capacity classes that it offers.

The TC500 uses a Liugong chassis with a spacious cab. It is made with imported steel and uses a dual engine geared to reduce fuel consumption and cut costs.

The truck crane focus of the stand is no surprise, as the company says it aims to achieve truck crane sales of 9,000 units in coming years, increasing its market share from 2% to 15%.

European customers should note that Liugong’s European distribution network has expanded with the merger of Polish bulldozer manufacturer Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW). Through this subsidiary, Liugong will be introducing key products into Europe.

In addition, Liugong will display nonlifting related construction equipment: wheel loaders, bulldozers, excavators, rollers, a grader, a paver, a milling machine, two backhoes, skid steers, and six concrete machines.

Manitowoc
Manitowoc will not show cranes at this exhibition, but it will provide a sales team with expertise on its China-built crawler, the MLC100, and recently launched truck cranes targeting the Chinese market, such as the Dongyue GT55 and GT25-5A.

The MLC100, crawler crane, introduced at Bauma 2010, belongs to a new crawler crane range built for the Chinese market at Manitowoc’s factory in Zhangjiagang. A larger crawler within the same family, the 150t capacity MLC150, is scheduled for launch in the near future.

The 100t capacity MLC100 crawler has a maximum boom length of 73m, which can be extended with an additional 24m jib, attaining a maximum tip height of 81.8m. It is provided with an imported Tier 3 Cummins engine while the undercarriage is built in China.

From its truck crane offerings, Manitowoc is targeting the Chinese market with two cranes built through its Chinese partner Dongyue.

One of these truck cranes is the 55t Dongyue GT55 truck crane with powerful lift owing to the two stage, 7m-long outriggers and a boom designed with a hexagonal cross-section, which achieves the maximum rigidity Manitowoc says. Manitowoc has added more windows for improved visibility.

The other truck crane that Manitowoc expects to generate interest is the 25t capacity GT25-5A, launched in March 2010. The truck crane lifts to a maximum height of 40.2m. When working with its jib attachment, it reaches 49m. Both of the featured truck cranes are being built in TaiAn, China.
