TAT HONG TILTS TOWARDS TOWERS

1 March 1998

“There are too many tower cranes in Singapore,” says SH Yen, group marketing manager of Tat Hong Heavy Equipment. But that does not stop him wanting to join the tower crane market.

Tat Hong is already the sole distributor of Sumitomo crawlers and excavators, as well as Link-Belt all-terrain and rough-terrain mobiles, across all South East Asia except China and Indonesia. It is also the Singapore dealer for Nippon Sharyo piling machines and Wylie Systems load indicators.

The company is now in negotiations with the prominent Italian tower crane manufacturer FM Gru for an agency deal.

But, Yen stresses, Tat Hong has yet to decide whether to follow through with a deal, given the fact that even in Singapore the market, already fiercely competitive between six or seven solid brands, has now taken a turn for the worse. “We may back off,” he says.
