The cranes are part of a delivery by MacGregor of 20 container vessels, each with a capacity of 1,800TEU (20ft equivalent units) to German ship owner OFFEN. A capacity of 1,800TEU means there is space for 1,800 20ft or 900 40ft boxes.
MacGregor Cranes’ general manager Leif Bystrom told Cranes Today in July: “I am not surprised by this order because trade is increasing globally, and the container market is getting bigger. Order sizes could continue to get larger.”
A MacGregor spokesman told Cranes Today this week that each vessel will be equipped with the company’s wire-luffing, multi-purpose cranes. They are of type GL with a lifting capacity of 45t (50.4 USt). The cranes will be delivered from MacGregor’s production partner Hochang Heavy Machinery Ind Co Ltd, in Ulsan, Korea, from March 2007 to July 2008.
The cranes will be installed on new buildings. The vessels are of a new standard design for Hyundai Mipo Dockyard and they are expected to contract more vessels of this type.
MacGregor is a division of Finnish cargo-handling solutions provider Cargotec Corporation, formerly part of KONE Corporation.
