Sany Group has presented a 250,000t-metre ring crane aimed at addressing the increased demands of next-generation nuclear power projects and other large-scale energy infrastructure.

The announcement comes as construction requirements in the nuclear sector continue to grow, with larger, more integrated projects necessitating advancements in lifting equipment.

Developed over a period of seven years, the crane features a 137m main boom and a 66m jib.

According to Sany, it achieves about 50% greater lifting capacity at large working radii than comparable cranes currently available.

The design allows for heavy module lifting involving multiple reactor islands to be undertaken using a single lifting solution.

This approach is intended to minimise the need for equipment relocation and simplify site logistics, by allowing key lifting tasks to be completed from one installation position.

The crane uses a fully electric drive system, powered directly from industrial grid electricity. This results in zero on-site emissions and considerably lower noise levels during operation.

Sany estimates that using the new crane can reduce project construction schedules by up to 15%.

Operating costs are said to be as little as one-quarter of those associated with conventional diesel-driven equipment.

The company also indicates that fewer equipment movements could lower site-related costs by about 20% and reduce logistics costs by approximately 30%.

Safety features integrated into the crane include intelligent anti-collision systems, remote diagnostics, 360-degree monitoring, and work-behaviour identification. These technologies are intended to enhance operator visibility and confidence during complex lifting operations.

Rope condition detection is also included as part of the crane’s monitoring capabilities.

Referring to the potential impact of the equipment, Sany highlighted the increased efficiency, lower operational costs, and reduced environmental impact for large-scale energy projects.

The firm underscored the importance of such advances as investment in nuclear and clean energy infrastructure rises.

Last month, Sany Group expanded its presence internationally with major equipment shipments and new supply deals in Southeast Asia and South America.
