Pfeifer Group has deployed a Grove GMK5150XL crane for a restoration project on the Hermien Windmill in Harreveld, The Netherlands.
This historic structure, which dates back to 1819, was recently renovated ahead of its reopening in April 2026.
To replace the windmill’s 3t sail blades, Pfeifer Group used its Grove GMK5150XL all terrain crane. The equipment was rigged with a 55.9m main boom and 12.5t of counterweight, successfully positioning the blades at an 18m radius.
Pfeifer Group director and owner Gerrit Pfeifer said: “On this project, the precision of the Crane Control System on the GMK5150XL gave us full confidence in handling the work on such a delicate, historical monument.
“The crane has excellent reach and strength, and it was straightforward to transport to the jobsite, set up, and then tear down. We are proud to play a role in preserving such an important piece of local history.”
Built by local doctor JJS van Raesfelt, the Hermien Windmill has served the community for over two centuries, providing grain under different ownerships.
Currently, it is overseen by the Hermien Belt-Driven Grain Mill Preservation Foundation. The windmill marked its bicentenary in 2019, a milestone celebrated with a visit from former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
The Grove GMK5150XL, known for its 68.7m MEGAFORM main boom, is designed for smooth transport and can handle various tasks efficiently.
It supports up to 10.2t of counterweight while adhering to axle load limits, making it suitable for complex jobsites. This manoeuvrable crane is part of Pfeifer Group’s fleet, which ranges from 50t to 300t capacities.
Pfeifer Group benefits from comprehensive support from Manitowoc’s facility in Breda, which provides essential parts, service, and technical guidance for its operations.
