Manitowoc has shown 18t and 25t truck cranes, due to launch in early 2009, from its new truck crane joint venture, Manitowoc-Dongyue, and emphasised its manufacturing and customer service developments in China and India.

Although German construction equipment manufacturer Liebherr predicts that its total sales in 2008 will reach EUR 8.4bn, an increase of 10% over 2007, it has hinted that sales will fall in 2009. In particular, tower crane sales have already begun to weaken.

Despite a little local difficulty in the US residential construction market, company results for crane builders and rental firms pointed ever upwards. However, a January poll of Cranes Today readers found that almost half of respondents only expected the boom to last one more year. A trading business for used mobile cranes set up by Japanese crane manufacturer Kobelco is moving away from exporting Japanese cranes, according to global sales and marketing manager Yukinori Okagaki.

Tower crane manufacturers at Bauma China have set their sights beyond the boundaries of China. Most of these exhibitors have export managers and have already sold some cranes outside of China, although rarely to the USA or Europe. There were large luffing-jib, flat-top and saddle-jib towers.

Manitowoc crane backlog slips

Manitowoc, announcing third quarter 2008 results, said that its crane backlog had fallen slightly from the last quarter, the first fall in outstanding crane orders since the second quarter of 2005. The company said it had cut the number of temporary workers at some European crane factories, and that its Spanish plant was working single shifts. However, CFO Carl Laurino said the firm was better placed to withstand any downturn than it was for earlier crane industry troughs.

The Spanish factory of tower crane manufacturer Linden-Comansa has delivered 12 cranes now working on Singapore's first casino, Marina Bay Sands. Five are the latest LCL 500 luffing jib cranes which have a free-standing height of 68.3m.

Tellock announces Brazilian component supply, boom truck plans

Speaking during a conference call on Manitowoc's second quarter 2008 earnings, Glen Tellock revealed that the company was sourcing tower crane mast sections from a supplier in Brazil, for sale in South America, and was looking into plans to launch boom trucks in the region using locally-built carriers. The company also announced that it expected to make more than $1bn from crane sales in emerging markets this year. Globally, the company's crane sales are up by a third on year-on-year.
